Title

ACUTE TOXICITY AND THE EFFECT OF SODIUM FLUORIDE ON THE OXYGEN CONSUMPTION OF THE INDIAN MAJOR CARP CIRRHINUS MRIGALA (HAMILTON)

Abstract

Acute toxicity experiments were conducted using static renewal bioassay 24 h, 48 h and 96 hours on the fresh water carp Cirrhinus mrigala fry and 24 h toxicity on fingerlings. The LC50 values for 24 h – 658.31 mg/l, 48 h – 556.41 mg/l, 96 h – 380.18 mg/l for fry stage respectively. For fingerlings 24 h LC50 value is 469.13 mg/l. The fingerling stage is found to be more sensitive than fingerling state in Cirrhinus mrigala. For further study of toxicant effect only fingerling stage was selected. The toxicant exposed fish showed erratic behavior like surfacing phenamenon, rapid opercular movement, gulping, loss of equilibrium moving towards bottom in the late hours. The fish was exposed to different concentrations of the toxicant i.e. 24h LC50 to study the oxygen consumption rate for 12 hours and the concentrations are < LC50 (sublethal), LC50 (lethal), >LC50 (above lethal) of toxicant. It was found the toxicant exerted more demand for oxygen on early hours and later there is gradual decrease in oxygen consumption leading to hypoxic and anoxic conditions in the bottom dwelling fish.
