The experience of celebrating Ganesh festival in Konkan is totally different than any other region in India. In villages all across Konkan, societies come together to comfy and celebrate their most loved and admired God –Shri Ganesh. In this paper the impact of Ganesh idol visarjan (immersion) on water quality of different water bodies of Lanja Tehsil are discussed, for this purpose various immersion points in the Lanja Tehsil were selected as sampling station where large number of Ganesh idols were immersed. Water samples were collected at evening hours during pre- immersion, during immersion and post immersion periods of Ganesh idols. The changes in physico-chemical properties of water were observed during these periods. Physico-chemical parameters like temperature, pH, DO, CO2, COD, BOD, total hardness, total alkalinity, TVC were analyzed. On the basis of study carried out, it is concluded that level of water pollution increases mainly during immersion period due to these religious activities and causes adverse effect on the aquatic ecosystem. Instead of discontinuing these religious activities, awareness among the people and society regarding eco-friendly celebration can reduce the pollution.
