Title

DEVELOPMENT OF A 3D MODEL FOR ESTIMATION OF IN-SITU BLOCK SIZES IN A LIMESTONE MINE THROUGH SURFACE RESPONSE ANALYSIS WHILE USING VOLUME AND SHAPE FACTOR OBTAINED FROM DIGITAL IMAGE ANALYSIS

Abstract

The geometric configuration of geological or structural discontinuous in rockmass results into formation of rock blocks of variable size and shape. The orientation and spacing of the discontinuities depict the shape and size of the blocks. The resulting sizes and shapes of block have a dominant influence on engineering properties and play important role in rockmass characterization. Identifying the three dimensional size and shape characteristics of rock blocks is beneficial in understanding the behavior of the in-situ rockmass during excavation, stability and in rock breakage by chemical and mechanical means. The shape of the in-situ blocks and fragmented blocks is particularly critical in understanding the breakage of rock under dynamic loading. The two dimensional shape factors of rocks block can be derived from Digital Image Analysis Technique by taking photographs of an exposed section or bench. This information is vital in deriving a three dimensional unfolding model of blocks from two dimensional measurements. The paper attempts to develop a model for determining in-situ block volumes of rocks using two dimensional data generated with the help of Digital Image Analysis Technique. Two dimensional and three-dimensional models for in-situ three dimensional block volumes were developed during this study while taking measurement from a scaled wooden model. The performance of these models was compared and is presented in this paper.
