Stability of coal rib during pillar extraction is paramount in B&P underground coal mining with caving. In this study, Rib stability has been evaluated by means of evaluating FOS, which as a ratio of the strength of coal rib to stress coming on it. In old age mining formulations for rib stability when subjected to case studies gave very low Factor of Safety which suggested significant problems of ground control, which were conflicting to the field observation. This has mandated the need to review the concept of rib stability. Technique numerical modeling in conjunction with FLAC software was used to estimate the rib stability. The methodology of evaluating the stability of rib by means of suggested rib strength formulation has been tried and validated at various Indian coal mines.
