Title

An Effective Hybrid Monocular Cue (HMC) Based Algorithm for Stereoscopic Conversion

Abstract

Recently, stereoscopic image/video conversion has been most demanding as it has a great stereo video experience. This paper presented an effective hybrid monocular cue (HMC) based algorithm for stereoscopic conversion. Normally, Stereoscopic conversion involves two steps: estimation of depth map from images or input video sequences and generation of two left and right view using estimated depth. This algorithm focus for the estimation of the depth map as a second step is well known and number of good algorithms are available. The estimation of the depth map is a difficult task. The depth can be estimated by using binocular cue and monocular cue. This paper uses a fusion of monocular cues as motion, Aerial Perspective cue (AP), Linear Perspective cue(LP), and Defocus cue to estimate the depth. The experimental results show that generation of the depth map is very close to the true depth map. Thus, the HMC algorithm can be effectively applied for stereoscopic view in 3D displays. This algorithm tested in different conditions such as the sequence of camera motion and multiple objects, static cameras, and background as stationary, a highly dynamic foreground and with less motion as background, and motion is in behind the foreground. This algorithm can be applied to images as well as video. Also, the subjective assessment evaluation test was performed on the proposed algorithm. It compares the generated stereoscopic view (proposed HMC algorithm) with the video captured by the stereoscopic camera.
