Title

Design and simulation of circular microstrip patch antenna at 12 GHz

Abstract

This study presents the design and simulation of a circular microstrip patch antenna optimized for operation at 12 GHz, utilizing RT/duroid 5880 as the dielectric substrate. Known for its low dielectric constant (εr = 2.2) and minimal loss tangent, RT/duroid 5880 is ideal for high-frequency applications, enabling improved signal integrity and lower losses. The antenna design is developed in CST Studio Suite, focusing on optimizing critical parameters such as the patch radius, substrate thickness, and feed position to achieve an efficient and compact structure. A coaxial probe feed is employed, selected for its simplicity and suitability for precise impedance matching. Simulation results show a well-defined radiation pattern with high gain, achieving excellent impedance matching and minimal return loss near the target frequency of 12 GHz. The antenna’s bandwidth, gain, and radiation efficiency are evaluated to confirm its suitability for high-frequency applications such as satellite and radar communication. The results indicate that using RT/duroid 5880 supports robust performance in terms of gain and radiation efficiency, essential for reliable communication systems. This work provides insights into the potential for using high-frequency substrates in compact antenna designs, highlighting CST software's effectiveness in optimizing microstrip antenna parameters.
