Title

Synthesis and Antibacterial Evaluation of New N-acyl Derivatives of (±) norleucine

Abstract

Antimicrobial activities of N-acylnorlucein derivatives were reported. To investigate new lead compounds, substituted anthranilicacid was coupled to (±) norlucine ethyl ester and evaluated for antimicrobial activities. The antimicrobial assay against 7 strains (five bacterial and two fungal) of microorganisms was performed using agar dilution method. The results show that amide ester compound 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f, 3g and 3h bearing electron withdrawing group in addition to amine group exhibit antigrowth activity on gram negative bacteria, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli at 0.9-7.8 μg/mL. Particularly, the compounds bearing nitro group are more active, displaying almost complete inhibition at 0.9 μg/mL. Whereas amide compounds with same substituent’s 4c, 4d, 4e, 4f, 4g and 4h exhibit antigrowth activity on gram positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. Both acid and ester derivatives are more potent towards antibacterial rather than antifungal activities. These N-acyl norlucine derivatives represent a new group of antimicrobial agents.
