Title

Crystalline β-Co(OH)2 Thin Films as an Electrode material for Electrochemical Capacitor Application

Abstract

Wide application and properties in transition metal oxides and hydroxides, Cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH)2) has recently received substantial attention due to its distinctive catalytic, electric, magnetic and electrochemical supercapacitive properties for industrial applications. The nano-rhombus like β-Co(OH)2 thin films were successfully synthesized onto a stainless steel substrate by a simple, versatile and economical chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The crystal structure and morphology of the β-Co(OH)2 thin films were explored by X-ray diffraction (XRD) & scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques respectively. The supercapacitive properties of nanorhombus-like β-Co(OH)2 thin films were evaluated in 1M KOH aqueous electrolyte by using cyclic voltammetry & galvanostatic charge-discharge method. The nano-rhombus like β-Co(OH)2 thin films were shown exceptional specific capacitance 280 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1 with 64% retention up to 30 mV s-1 by cyclic voltammetry measurement as well as maximum specific capacitance 242 F g-1 at 1 mA cm-2 with 66% retention up to 10 mA cm-2 by galvanostatic charge-discharge measurement. Present investigation proposes that the high surface morphology of nanorhombus like structure makes β-Co(OH)2 as highly effective materials for energy storage applications.
