First objective of present piece of research is to highlight the trends and patterns of urbanization in Punjab. Secondly, the paper seeks to highlight the problems of urbanization in Punjab. The paper finds that the pace of urbanization in India and Punjab have been steady bust upwards rising with a few decadal exception since 1901. The same process continued from 1950s to 1980s as well. But 1990s onwards due to national and global policy of liberalization, privatization and globalization, the pace of urbanization in Punjab really took off rapidly. India and its province Punjab, both have experienced rapid urbanization but pace of urbanization in Punjab have been greater than the national averages. Census data shows that most of the urbanites i.e. 58% lived in 17 class I cities in 2011 which means lesser proportion of urban population lived in other classified cities. The major problems of urbanization in Punjab are shortage of housing, proliferation of slums, critical inadequacies in Public utilities, un-authorized development, deteriorating urban environment, lack of developed land and disposal measures, paucity of transportation facilities. At last some recommendations have been made.
