Title

An Experimental Study on Performance and Emissions characteristics of a Dual Fuel DI Diesel Engine

Abstract

This paper aims at the development of a dual fuel Direct Injection (DI) Diesel engine. The existing computerized single cylinder four stroke Diesel engine is converted to dual fuel engine with suitable modifications at the inlet manifold. The dual fuel engine has developed to address the major issues related to existing diesel engines particularly exhaust emissions like NOx and Particulate Matter. These are mainly concerned with formation of fog and acid rain. The dual fuel engine is one which is hascombustion characteristics of Otto engine as well as diesel engine. The combustion in dual fuel engines occurs with injection of small amount of pilot fuel (Diesel / Biodiesel) into the engine cylinder towards end of compression of premixed gas- air mixture. The performance and emissions characteristics of dual fuel engine were analyzed for different loading conditions. The pilot fuel quantity is kept constant and the primary fuel Natural Gas quantity is varied. The performance characteristics mainly Break Specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and Break Thermal Efficiency were studied for different loading conditions with varying proportion of Compressed Natural Gas(CNG). The emissions characteristics mainly NOx and Particulate Matter were analyzed for different loading conditions with varying proportion of CNG.
