INDIAN FOLK ART
“Impact on Contemporary Fashion – A study”
ABSTRACT
Indian Folk Art has been living from about the 3rd millennium BC to the modern times. Passed down from one generation to another, Indian folk art has made its presence across the world, Each art form has its own aesthetic sense and elegance. There are numerous kinds of folk arts like painting, puppetry, embroidery, toys, floor decoration etc. Almost every region of India has its own style of folk arts.
Though these art traditions are a lot in number, many of them are in an endangered stage and few have lost their existence. The people are not aware of most of the art forms as they are too vast and many folk arts are still a stigma. There are very few people and organizations who have the concern towards these art forms and they came up with great plans for their sustainability.
Among these, some are very popular and well known arts, for example, Kolam, Rangoli and Alpana is floor decoration while Phulkari and Kantha are embroidery on cloth and Madhubani, warli, Kalamkari are some of the famous painting styles.
In the days of yore, these arts were made with natural dyes and colors made of soil, mud, leaves and charcoal, on canvas or cloth – giving it a sense of antiquity, vintage nostalgia. Being culturally diverse and distinct, a variety of folk art forms have evolved over the years; some untouched by modernization, some adapting to new colors and materials. Each art depict natural bodies, religious epics or Gods and Goddesses mostly, but they’re all unique, admirable and inimitable in their own might.
Fashion is one of the major platforms that have given Folk Art its due recognition through creativity yet retaining its originality. Apart from artists, Fashion designers have played a major role in not only bringing the art to the global forum but also have ultimately made the art alive.
Today, many fashion designers are inspired by charm of our traditional folk art style. Methods like fabric painting, block printing and various types of embroideries are few of the techniques which makes Indian fashion appreciated and accepted across the world
This study focuses on the development of these folk art forms and their impact on the fashion industry. Fashion designers have played an important role in not only bringing the art to the world arena but also has ultimately made the art live by providing livelihood to the artisans. The examples would explain about the traditional folk art forms of India, their growth, development, and their contemporary existence and how are they being adapted by the fashion industry, with its originality in place.
