One of the well-known Indian women novelist, Shashi Deshpande in, The Dark Holds no Terrors expresses the sufferings the frustration and disappointment of women, who experiences social and cultural oppression in the male dominated society. The best thing about Shashi Deshpande is that her characters are real and alive. Her characters behave differently in different situations and different conditions.Her protagonists are more intelligent and more capable women than men. They desire to have their own individuality and originality. Through the writing of Shashi Deshpande, the readers can feel the joy and pathos of the characters. Though all her novels are open ended, the central characters would be transformed into new women with a new attitude to life.
