Title

Design of STATCOM with fuzzy self-tuning PI controller

Abstract

Nowadays the demand for electrical power has been increased tremendously due to enhanced technical advancements and also due to increased population growth in the country. This has created a deteriorating voltage profile and decreasing the stability and security. To maintain the power system stability, voltage and reactive power can be controlled and managed to provide adequate quality of service. Various FACT controllers developed in the power system to provide stability to the system. STATCOM is the device used to improve the voltage profile in the power system. In general, the DC link capacitor voltage is regulated by a PI controller for load compensation and voltage regulation. But the converter output depends on the dc capacitor. So that capacitor as to maintain constant reference value as early as possible always. In this paper self-tuning fuzzy PI control method for STATCOM is proposed to damp out the dc bus oscillations in IEEE 5 bus system. Simulations using MATLAB R2013b/ Simulink are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed controller. The results of this proposed controller have an excellent capability in damping power system oscillations.
