Title

Effect of Social and Electronic media on developing children and their management through Ayurveda

Abstract

One of the notable changes in our social environment in the 21st century has been the saturation of our culture and daily lives by the mass media.A national Kaiser Family Foundation (US) survey found that children aged 8-18years had an average media usage time of 6 hours and 21minutes daily.Total media exposer time for most of the children exceeded the time spent in all other activities except sleep.Although data from India is limited, a significant portion of our children also have considerable TV viewing per day i.e. more than 2 hours/day. There are many ways social media can be used by children in a positive way.It is not just an avenue for socializing, kids and adolescents can be creative, interact ,and learn. The negative effects on children and adolescents are also numerous.Social and Electronic media can affect on children’s cognitive, social and behavioral development. Considering the increasing exposure of children to newer forms of media,we decided to review the current literature on the effects of social media and electronic media on child health .It is widely accepted that media has profound influence on child health, including violence, obesity, tobacco and alcohol use,and risky sexual behaviours. We need to find ways to optimize the role of media in our society, taking advantage of their positive attributes and minimizing their negative ones. Ayurveda is one of the oldest health care system that take a holistic view of the physical, mental, spiritual and social aspects of human life, health and disease. The treatment approach in the Ayurveda system is holistic and individualized having preventive, curative, mitigative, recuperative and rehabilitative aspects. So ,we need to understand better how to manage the negative impact of social and electronic media and make it more positive through Ayurveda.
