Title

SATRA INSTITUTION OF ASSAM : AN ANALYTICAL STUDY

Abstract

Abstract: The Neo vaishnavite movement brought immense religious reforms to Assam which eventually brought changes to the assamese social and cultural life. In Assam this movement was initiated by Sankardeva. Sankardeva took various measures for the spread and expansion of this Neo-Vaishnavite movement or religion. One of the results of this movement was establishment of a social organisation known as ‘Satra’. Satra is such a platform which is very closely connected to the assamese lifeline. It teaches us the lesson of liberalism and tolerance. Satra enrich our culture in an unique way. The cultural practise of satra is popularly known as satriya culture. Various cultural programmes, drama, music, instruments, handicraft, mask making are the main elements of satriya culture. . The satra help people to develop their cultural activities as well as financial activities. It carries greater educative value in the formation of assamese society. This paper attempts to analyse the the establishment and evolution of satra institutions of Assam. The importance of satra institutions in Assamese culture & society , the value of satra institutions as the centre of recreation, art and culture, vocational training, social organisation, library and platform for unity between different tribes and castes is tried to evaluate in this paper. This paper is basically prepared on analytical method based on secondary sources of data such as books, journals, magazine, newspaper and internet.
