Title

The Relationship with Nature in Huckleberry Finn and its Resonances in the Wider American Imaginations

Authors

Abstract

Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn deals with nature as almost a personified entity with its living presence consistently manifested in the novel and very intrinsically integrated into the bildungsroman of the text. Huck’s identity is critically woven with the natural, in opposition to the cultural, leading the text to draw significant links with the American ideal for individualism. The nature in the American Imagination is also an important subtext in the work. However, a close reading of the text raises questions on whether the individualism inherent in Huck is nothing but Twain’s depiction of a botched autonomy due to the universally accepted control of the culture.

Key Words

Huckleberry, nature, individualism, freedom, autonomy, culture
