Title

Magnetic Energy Recovery Switching for Power Factor Correction and Reactive Power

Abstract

Today there is a point of interest to increase the efficiency of nonlinear load. A basic and very perspective way for high efficiency is to optimize the power factor. The power factor correction in nonlinear load becomes more and more important with regard to their increasing complexity. The purpose of this paper is to show the potential of Magnetic Energy Recovery Switch (MERS) for power factor improvement and reactive power compensation by using proper control strategy. The MERS is characterized by simple configuration of four active switching devices with one DC capacitor, per phase. The three modes of operation are explained. Simulation study using MATLAB software is carried out with resistive and inductive load and results are compared with and without MERS to show the effectiveness of proposed switch for power factor improvement.
