Title

Parameters Affecting Women Labour Productivity in Construction Industry: A Review

Abstract

Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world”, is a well said quote by Hillary Clinton, yet this talent is rarely valued at the same level as that of men’s in some areas of our country. Though another concern is the number of opportunities available to them, disappointingly in India even today the women power in construction industry is understated. Women are looked at as dispensable resource at management level and in workforce. The scenario is further poor in labour domain. They are poor, under-educated, employed in low-wage or unpaid work, and tend to lag in forming their own opinions regarding their wellbeing. Indian construction industry is to a greater extent labourintensive industry. Moreover a large portion of this labour community consists of women of all ages, family background, and life status. In this review parameters affecting productivity of women labour are studied. It is concluded that the major parametric classification is social, economic, physical or psychological parameter. Reduced productivity of labours is responsible for cost and time overruns in construction projects. Systematic study of the above parameters and identification of the root causes there in helps in minimizing the loss of productivity in projects. This paper presents a critical review of parameter affecting productivity of women labour in construction.
