Title

Corrosion Identification and Assessment of a Steel Pipeline using EMI Technique

Abstract

Pipelines are the main source of transportation of fluids like oil and natural gas and therefore, Oil and Gas industries are of economic importance for every country. However pipelines are often subjected to failure due to many problems. One of the main problems concerned with safety of oil and gas industries is corrosion. The main cause of corrosion in a metal is due to the chemical reaction between the metal and its surroundings due to which it is exposed to corrosive environment leading to corrosion. For diagnosing the health of the structure (whether in damaged or undamaged condition), the Electromechanical Impedance (EMI) technique has proved to be a useful tool. Piezo-electric sensors (PZT patches) which can act as sensors as well as actuators are used in the EMI technique and given a frequency (normally in the range of 30-400 KHz) through which conductance (real part) and susceptance (imaginary part) signatures are obtained. The signatures obtained give useful information regarding the health of structure, thereby signaling the presence or severity of damage. In present study an experimental setup consisting of a part of pipeline is examined which is subjected to artificial corrosion by using concentrated HCL solution. This study aims to find out the sensitiveness of pzt for location of damage and also its ability to examine the severity of damage of pipe specimen. To quantify the damage, Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) Index is used.
