Title

Seismic Behaviour of a Structure by using Water Tank as a Tuned Mass Damper

Abstract

Planning Smart Cities involves development of sustainable infrastructure and accommodation for the people living in it and due to lack of proper buildable urban land, there is a huge requirement for Tall buildings. Natural Disasters like Bhuj Earthquake -2001, Tsunami-2004, Gorkha Earthquake -2015, which shook the entire world can cause widespread damage and can claim lot of lives. Though earthquakes cannot be stopped, but smarter methods can be developed to make the structures resist these huge lateral forces. Especially tall structures are in general highly vulnerable to lateral forces. Now-a-days several techniques are available to minimize the vibration of the structure. Out of the several techniques available for vibration control, concept of using Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) has been proven as one of the successful techniques. Water Tank to be placed on top of the structure can be considered as a tuned mass damper.The technique of TMD is very well appreciated. According to the theory of structural dynamics the displacements, the elastic forces caused in the primary structure get minimised caused by a disturbance, when a complementary structure with matching frequency is mounted on its top. The disturbing phenomenon could be the ground motion. Computational model of the framed building has been done using ETABS. TMD is a passive energy absorbing device consisting of a mass, a spring and a damper. The TMD device shall be simple, economical and practically feasible structure that will behave in an acceptable manner to maximize life safety, reducing the property losses and minimize the earthquake effects on the building. This study has been made to study the effectiveness of using TMD for controlling vibration of a structure. Parameters such as building height, location of water tank (TMD) for its effectiveness shall be studied in detail through this paper.
