Title

Modeling Design of Rectangular Combined Footings with Artificial Neural Networks

Abstract

In this paper, a back-propagation artificial neural network(ANN) model for design of rectangular combined footing with no side restrictions is proposed. The model has been examined for its efficiency and accuracy using various input parameters such as sizes of two columns, center to center distance between columns, axial loads and bending moments on columns, safe bearing capacity of soil, grades of concrete and steel. The output parameters considered are the areas of reinforcement in longitudinal direction and in lateral direction. About 100 data sets for simulation were obtained from a structural design software package and are used for training and testing of the ANN model. The training of the neural network model has been carried out using Bayesian Regularization Algorithm available in ANN-tool box of R2017a MATLAB software. The research demonstrates the utility of the back-propagation neural networks in modeling the non-linear relationship between different input parameters and output parameters associated with the design of rectangular combined footing. In addition, the well trained and tested neural networks can also be used to carry out routine design checks/ proof checks of the design of combined footing.
