Title

A Study of Undrained Shear Strength Behavior on Black Cotton Soil with Granite Dust

Abstract

Expansive soils are found in many parts of India. These soils are also known as black cotton soils. These soils are susceptible to volume changes due to the presence of montmorillonite minerals. Montmorillonite swells with the absorption of water. Montmorillonites expand considerably more than other clays due to water penetrating the interlayer molecular spaces. Due to the seasonal variation of moisture content soil swells when it absorbs water and shrinks when the water evaporates. Structures constructed on these soils face serious problems because of alternate swelling and shrinkage behaviour.Several researchers investigated on the possibilities of strengthening such soils with blends of different materials. However, the research is still on for a sustainable material. Granite dust is one such material which is cheaper and abundantly available, at least in the Deccan plateau region which is the proximity of Andhra Pradesh where major part of the land consists of black cotton soils. This study presents the effect of granite dust on undrained shear strength of a black cotton soil stabilized with 1 - 4%. Black cotton soil stabilized with optimum percentage of granite dust was compacted with three compaction energy levels in the laboratory. Maximum dry density and optimum moisture content corresponding to each energy level were determined to evaluate the granite dust as a stabilizer. Samples were prepared to conduct triaxial shear strength tests to evaluate shear parameters. Strength results with useful conclusions are presented.
