Title

Studies on Engineering Behavior of Expansive Soil Stabilized by Slag and Alkali-Activated Slag – A Comparison

Abstract

Lightly loaded civil engineering structures such as residential buildings, canal linings and pavements founded in expansive soils are often stabilized with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and lime. The production processes of traditional stabilizers are energy intensive and emit a large quantity of CO2. Geopolymer, with its high strength, low cost, low energy consumption and CO2 emissions during synthesis, offers a promising alternative to OPC. In this paper, a geopolymer synthesized from ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and an alkaline solution was used to stabilize expansive clay. The paper presents experimental results obtained from tests conducted on Alkali- activated GGBS - clay and GGBS -clay blends. Compaction characteristics and unconfined compressive strength were determined on the GGBS - clay specimens to which GGBS is added in different quantities such as 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% by dry weight. And also, unconfined compressive strength were determined on the alkali-activated GGBS - clay specimens to which GGBS is added in different quantities such as 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% by dry weight. Test results indicated that the use of geopolymers synthesized from GGBS, in expansive clay stabilization is a promising alternative to traditional materials.
