Title

Seismic Response of Elevated Liquid Storage Steel Tank Isolated by Variable Radius Friction Pendulum System

Abstract

Investigation has been carried out for the seismic response of elevated liquid storage steel tank isolated by variable radius friction pendulum system (VRFPS) located at top of tower by considering the normal component of different near-field ground motions. Here, slender and broad tanks are examined for the study. The consistent fluid mass of elevated tank is demonstrated as lumped masses known as impulsive, convective and rigid masses. Seismic response of isolated elevated tank is determined by solving the governing equation of motion using Newmark’s linear acceleration method. To find the efficiency of VRFPS, seismic response of elevated tank isolated by VRFPS is compared with the seismic response of tank isolated by sliding isolator with variable curvature with fifth-order polynomial (PSIVC-5th) and third-order polynomial (PSIVC-3rd). It is concluded that VRFPS is effective in reducing base shear, impulsive displacement, convective displacement and tower displacement as compared to PSIVC-5th and PSIVC-3rd whereas PSIVC-5th and PSIVC-3rd are effective in reducing isolator displacement as compared to VRFPS.
