This study has been undertaken to establish a potential non-invasive, relatively easy strategy using urine as the sample matrix for diagnosing chronic respiratory disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this case-control study, early morning mid-stream urine samples were collected from 84 volunteers, aged 21-80 years (non-treated patients of COPD, NSCLC and healthy controls). 2.0ml of processed urine samples were examined using a static headspace sampler coupled to a gas chromatography – mass spectrometer detector unit (GC-MS). A set of five unique volatile compound markers was identified with at least two fold up regulated or down regulated expression in patients compared to healthy population, verified by the results of area under ROC curve (0.963). The developed method could differentiate with excellent discriminating power between control and patient samples, including the two respiratory disorders under observation exhibiting substantial quantifiable differences among them.
