Title

Using plastic waste as construction material

Authors

Abstract

Plastic which is toxic in nature is found to be nearly 5% in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). A major problem nowadays is the disposal of plastic wastes. These wastes are non biodegradable in nature causing environmental pollution and hygiene problems. The rapid industrialization and urbanization in the country leads lot of infrastructure development. This process leads to several problems like shortage of construction materials, increased productivity of wastes and other products. The disposal of waste plastics is also causing a great challenge and the world as a whole as the usage of plastics is growing day by day and it takes centuries for waste plastics to decompose. Hence, there is the need to adopt effective methods to utilize these plastics. The reuse of waste plastics as partial replacement of fine aggregate in M20 concrete. Waste Plastics were incrementally added in 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% to replace the same amount of Aggregate. Tests were conducted on coarse aggregates, fine aggregates, cement and waste plastics to determine their physical properties. Solid Blocks of size 150 mm X 150 mm X 150 mm is casted and tested for 7, 14 and 28 days strength. The result shows that the compressive strength of M20 concrete with waste plastics is 4% for Solid Blocks. It is concluded that the modified pavement blocks would contribute to the disposal of plastics in the world.

Key Words
