Title

A comparative study on joint verses nuclear family regarding Social, cognitive and language development among pre-school children

Abstract

Introduction: Families play a pivotal role in providing the most congenial atmosphere to children for their style of life and basic patterns of behavior. Parents are chief role model in shaping the personality of a child. The quality of relationship with parents and their children allow them to grow and explore and gain experience. Due to high living standards in city, it is need of time that both the parents have to work to run family. It is also observed in many studies that children those belong to nuclear family are poor in growth and development. This may leave the children unguided. Compared to nuclear family, there is higher bond of unity and affection among different family members and relations in a joint family. In a joint family, the prosperity and adversity of the family are shared equally. A child behavioral pattern to a large extent is the product of the environment in which he or she lives .During this period the family, school and community help in shaping his or her character, molding the personality and laying foundation for his or her future. If the family, school and community do their work properly, his or her chances for a successful and happy life are greatly increased. Methodology: A comparative study was conducted on joint verses nuclear family regarding Social, cognitive and language development among pre-school children of charotar region.Gujarat.Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select samples. Performa of demographic variable and observational check list was used to collect data.Result: The study revealed that Mean value of social, cognitive and language development in joint family were 13.35, 13.73 and 11.23 and SD were 2.4, 2.55 and 2.05. While in nuclear family social, cognitive and language were 9.49, 9.87, 7.69 and SD were 2.0, 2.9, and 1.9. Total mean score of joint family was 38.31; SD was 5.29 and in nuclear family mean score was 27.5; SD was 5.3. (p value:<0.05) Conclusion: The study concluded that the social cognitive and language development of joint family children is better than the nuclear family children. As per their score found that statistical mean value of all three parameter is high in joint family compare to nuclear family.
