Title

Evaluation and Mitigation of Risks in Construction Projects using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)

Abstract

In the era of spanking globalization, we cannot forebear to not to talk about the risk, which has become an incumbent part of everyday life. The risk is ubiquitous, in every area of life. There are myriads of areas where risk is present. One such area is the construction industry, where risk is ever-present element of a great puzzle. Therefore, the effective risk management will be to find a “golden mean” in its management, in relation to the implemented project. On the one hand it will involve protection against the risk of negative side, by means of detailed identification and classification of risks, resulted in a comprehensive analysis. On the other hand, the management should be based on checking the maximum benefits of these decisions, using all the mathematical and analytical tools. The thesis presents the study involved in Evaluation of risks factors affecting construction projects and various measures to mitigate them. After reviewing the literature and discussion with the experts for clarity, ambiguity and simplicity, 41 common risk factors were identified and classified into 10 major risk factors group. The questionnaire was developed based on the Saaty scale system. The questionnaire was sent to the experienced professionals and practitioners of 10 different firms who are working in construction projects. A database was collected with the help of questionnaire received. The Evaluation is done with the application of Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) which is one of the best Multi-Criteria Decision Making Tool for precise results. The results of this study may be used to improve the risk management practices in construction projects thus contributing to their overall project performance.
