Title

Child Labour in the Local Share Vehicle Service: Case Studies of Tempo Handyman of Goalpara Town, Assam.

Abstract

Children are the seeds of nation’s future strength. No resource is useful until it got utilized properly by human resources. But we often notice that somehow these potential human resources always got deprived. Child labour is one of the way through which the unprivileged children get deprived. Child labour is a social evil which ruins the future of millions of children. Child labour refers to the employment of children in a gainful occupation which is not only dangerous to their health but also deny opportunities for their development. It is children that social justice must begin. Keeping this as the main purpose, the paper aimed to understand the socio-economic background, working condition, and other important facts encouraging child labour, with particular reference to the children working as tempo handyman in local share vehicle services at Goaplara town the headquarter of Goalpara district, Assam. The rationale of selecting the Goalpra town is that the problem of child labour is very much prominent. We find child labours in every sector e.g. child labour working in dhabas, shops and tea stalls, in tempos (public transport) as apprentice to the drivers, working as street vendors or as garbage pickers, domestic helpers etc. The number of the child working in tempos or other public sectors is very high. But as it is a small town scientific study of these labourers is very less. The study concludes that the factors, working conditions of the child labours are mainly poverty, are lack of interest in studies, desire to earn money, family pressure and poor performance in studies. It also reveals all the children work 10 to 12 hours daily in a polluted environment and very prone to road accidents as they don’t obey road safety rules which is very dangerous. The premature earning by the kids also makes them vulnerable to immoral activities.
