Title

A STUDY ON FINANCIAL INCLUSION OF RURAL WOMEN IN TIRUNELVELI DISTRICT

Abstract

Modern banking offices are not so friendly with rural women. Hence they are reluctant to avail banking services. In such a modern environment financial inclusion for rural women has become a myth. In this respect the following issues stands to be answered. How far rural women have been financially included in Tirunelveli District? and If not so what have been the hurdling factors for the rural women in Tirunelveli District?. The study attempts to find solution to these issues. Primary and secondary data have been collected from different sources and used for analysis. Secondary data required for the study have been collected from the various publications of the Reserve Bank of India and various reports of the Government of India. Primary data was collected through a well structured interview schedule structured by the researcher in consultation with the experts in the field. Out of 425 village panchayats in the study area there were 110 village panchayats selected for the study. In the second stage, from each of the identified village panchayats, 5 women were selected at random. Judgement sampling method was used in selecting the appropriate respondents for the study. Thus, the study has a sample of 550 respondents from 110 village panchayats in Tirunelveli district. The conclusion derived from the study on financial inclusion in Tirunelveli district is that a good percentage of the rural women have financially included that is out of the total 550 respondents, 438 respondents (79.6 per cent) are financially included and 112 respondents (20.4 per cent) are financially excluded. It is found in the study that financial inclusion is high in Tirunelveli district.
