Title

Guidance and Counseling as Tool for Incapacitating Corruption in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

Abstract

Abstract: As it is quite known, Guidance and Counseling is saddled with responsibilities of creating awareness on what should be done in a proper manner to be a means to an end. And it is believed that it will serve as a tool for overcoming corruption in tertiary institutions. The study delved into corrupt practices perceived to be pervasive in academic institutions and deduced evidence with attempts to elucidate the need for guidance and counseling support. Accordingly, objectives and research questions were expressed and answered. The population of the study was extracted from students and staff in tertiary institutions that are considered important in providing solution to corrupt practices, through the method of simple random sampling. Personal interview by the researchers was conducted as the main instrument used for the data collection. The findings discovered that corrupt practices do exist in teaching and learning, and students’ perceived favoritism, nepotism and examination malpractices to be the major forms of corruption in tertiary institutions, with some perceived staff to be the originators of the acts. The study therefore, recommends that Guidance and Counseling should be applied appropriately to both the students and staff in order to overcome corrupt practices in tertiary institutions of Nigeria.
