Title

Safety Management in Construction Industry using Relative Importance Index Method (RII) and Weighted Average Method (WAM)

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify and evaluate the safety management in construction projects to minimize and control health and safety (H&S) of construction workers. Questionnaire is used to collect a wide range of opinions from experienced professionals working in different construction sites for comparison between them. After reviewing the literature and discussion with the experts for clarity, ambiguity and simplicity, 40 typical factors affecting safety management were identified and classified into 12 major groups. The questionnaire was developed based on the Likert Scale system ranging from 1 to 5. The questionnaire was sent to the experienced professionals and practitioners of different firms who are working in construction projects. A database was collected with the help of questionnaire received. The Evaluation is done with the help of RII & WAM Methods. The reviews of the related literature are the first step in obtaining information from previously related studies. The literature reviews provide a theoretical background about safety management that guided the design of the questionnaire. This research concludes that the construction industry has a high number of fatalities and long-term injuries. This is unacceptable in a modern society and it also makes the industry inefficient, with days lost due to injuries. The results of this study may be used to improve the safety management practices in construction projects thus contributing to their overall project performance.
