Title

SUSTAINABLE BIOMASS UTILIZATION IN INDIA: POLICY IMPLICATIONS FOR CANE TRASH AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL FOR BAGASSE COGENERATION IN RURAL SUGAR INDUSTRY

Authors

Abstract

The future of sustainable energy relies on an enhanced share of renewable energy, particularly in developing agrarian countries where majority of world’s population resides. India has the potential to lead the journey towards clean energy. India’s growing agricultural scenario presents optimistic drivers for clean and sustainable energy utilization. India is the second largest sugar producer in the world swiftly passing from sugar production to energy production. Renewable energy through bagasse cogeneration has been successfully demonstrated by Indian sugar industries. The Indian sugar industry has enormous untapped energy potential. This paper is based on a unique approach to explore idle energy avenues through cane trash as an alternative fuel for bagasse cogeneration (BC) in rural sugar industries. An applied case study of sugar factory in western India has been studied. The results show increased power generation, economic development, earning carbon credits and providing sustainable rural livelihood opportunities for local villagers. It also offers concrete policy implications for future sustainability.
