Title

Effect of Curved Blade on Induction Swirl of an IC Engine – CFD Analysis

Abstract

Internal combustion engine research efforts have been focused to reduce exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and to improve the quality of the combustion process. The improved air-fuel mixing rate is a significant factor that shortens combustion duration and improves combustion efficiency. Hence, a profound understanding of the intake process is a fundamental key for thorough mixing of air and fuel. So, an attempt was made to optimize the airflow performance during intake process by re-designing the inlet valve of an internal combustion engine by attaching curved blade at different orientations on the inlet valve in order to enhance the generation of turbulence by induction swirl. Simulation was done under identical operating conditions on the inlet valve; without curved blade, with 1-curved blade on its circumference (shrouded model) and with 2-curved blades placed radial on top surface of the valve (radial model). The geometric modeling of the three models was generated in CATIA V5 and meshing was done using HyperMesh 10.0. Fluent 14.5 was used to study the flow within the cylinder by using a suitable turbulence model. Based on the simulation results it was found that the three flow parameters such as swirl ratio, velocities and turbulence kinetic energy was high with the shrouded model.
