Title

INCIDENCE OF PESTICIDE POISONING AT A TERTIARY REFERRAL HOSPITAL IN TELANGANA REGION

Abstract

Warangal district in Telangana region records highest pesticide poisoning admissions every year where pesticide poisoning has become an important aspect for morbidity and mortality. This study is carried out to analyze the frequency of pesticide poisoning related admissions from different areas in Telangana region at MGM hospital during 2014-2015, to study its prevalence among gender and age groups and also to identify the list of pesticides that are frequently used for self-poisoning in Warangal district of Telangana region. The data was collected and analyzed from all the patients admitted with pesticide poisoning for 2 yrs i.e. 2014 and 2015 for demographic data, class of the pesticide used for poisoning and fatal outcome of patients. During the years 2014 and 2015, 3200 patients were hospitalized due to pesticide-related poisoning. Among them 2038 were males and 1162 were females. 39% of the patients fell under the age group 20-30 years, overall fatal cases reported were 600 (18.7%) and most of the deaths were due to organophosphorus (OP) pesticides. Among the known OP pesticides, monocrotophos (84) and chlorpyriphos (48) were found to be the highest number of cases reported. Most of the cases were reported from Athmakur and Hasanparthy mandals of Telangana region and a majority of them were self-poisoning. The present study helps in finding out the prevalence and frequency of pesticide poisoning in the Telangana region.
