Title

Relative tectonic assessment of Lidder basin, Kashmir valley: Westerly Extension of Great Himalayan Range

Abstract

Landscape in tectonically active Lidder basin (Westerly extension of great Himalayan range) results from a complex integration of crustal block motions as well as erosion and deposition processes. Evaluation of relative active tectonics based on morphometric analysis is useful in evaluating morphology and topography of the present landscape. Results of this analysis are accumulated both from geomorphological and morphometric indices to assess the tectonically weakzones within the basin. This paper discusses the role of active tectonics in terms of active mountain fronts, tilting of the basin in different directions due to ongoing tectonism within the basin and also from out sequence thrusts, knickzones within the basin are frequently distributed which shows the tectonic anomalies on the basin and some faults have been identified as this study will generate baseline data for field studies for the better assessment of tectonic activity and active faults within the basin for future seismic hazard assessment.
