Title

Virtual Instrumentation based Lung Volume and Capacity measurement using Pressure Sensor

Abstract

Spirometer is used to estimate Lung diseases such as asthma, pulmonary embolism, respiratory bronchitis. A spirometer can measure the flow and volume of gas moving into and out of the lungs during inspiratory and expiratory cycles[1]. The Spiro metrics test includes parameter of mechanics ventilatory like VC(Vital Capacity), ERV(Expiratory Reserve Volume), IRV(Inspiratory Reserve Volume), IC(Inspiration Capacity), TV(Tidal Volume), Residual volume(RV), FRC(Functional Residual capacity), Forced Expiratory Volume (FEVT), Total Lung Capacity(TLC). MPX10DP Pressure sensor was used in this work. This pressure sensor sense both directional input but only one directional output is obtained(i.e. positive output). Acquisition of Respiratory Signal was carried out from the MPX10DP pressure sensor which is interfaced with Arduino and LabVIEW. The virtual instrument acquires and processes the respiratory signals from the Arduino using the micro USB cable.
