Abstract: Crotalaria pallida Aiton an annual erect herb belongs to the family Fabaceae is distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. C. pallida is commonly known as “rattlesnake” and is widely used in traditional medicine to treat various diseases like diarrhoea, diabetics, skin infections, snake bite and urinary problems. The plant possesses various pharmacological activities that include antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, anti-HIV, antidiabetic, anti-proliferative, cytotoxic, apoptotic and analgesic activity. Phytochemical investigations have revealed the presence of alkanes, alkaloids, pterocarpanoids, flavonoids, terpenes and fatty acids. CpaTI and CpPRI are two novel peptides isolated from C. pallida. The aim of this review is give an comprehensive account on ethnobotany, pharmacology, phytochemistry and biotechnological aspects of C. pallida that can be utilized by practitioners in the field of pharmaceuticals, modern biotechnology and drug discovery research.
