Title

Seismic Response of Liquid Storage Tank Isolated With Double Variable Radius Friction Pendulum System

Abstract

In this investigation, seismic response of liquid-storage tank isolated with Double Variable Radius Friction Pendulum System (DVRFPS) under far-field earthquake ground excitations is investigated. Here, the slender & broad tank are considered for the study. Governing equation of motion is solved using Newmark’s linear acceleration method. Top and Bottom sliding surfaces are considered four different design cases of geometry and friction coefficient are analyzed. Seismic response of the liquid-storage tanks (Slender & Broad) are compared with that of Double Variable Frequency Pendulum Isolator (DVFPI) to check the efficiency of DVRFS. It is determined that base shear, impulsive displacement and convective displacement are minimized in DVRFPS as compared to that of DVFPI but the isolator displacement are more in DVRFPS, when time period and friction coefficient of top sliding surface is less than bottom sliding surface as compared to that of DVFPI. For other design cases, DVRFPS is effective in reducing isolator displacement as compared to DVFPI.
