Title

Smart cities: a systematic review of the literature

Abstract

Smart city is an emerging concept as a research domain. A Smart city is a place where items around the town are connected. Street lights, building, devices, cars, power grids all are sending data back and forth, passively working together to improve the community. The concept of Smart city is being able to combine a lot of different franchises to a single unit. The objective of Smart city is to provide core infrastructure, a clean and sustainable environment in order to enhance the quality of life of its citizens. It is done by the application of smart solutions using smart technology. This paper focuses on how to utilize and optimize various resources in designing and development of the smart cities. Researchers can use this paper to seek background information for further investigation. It not only provides invaluable insights to the research scholars but also to the managers or concerned authorities, who have the desire to apply the concept of Smart city into practice in their cities. Practitioners may also use the findings of this paper as guidance for funding in the research of Smart city domain. It aims to analyze the scientific studies on sustainability and smart city to synthesize an understanding of the smart city concept, to determine research themes and types in the current research landscape. It uses the Chourabi Framework to explain the concept of smart cities, to evaluate the components of smart city initiatives and explores how a model can be applied to develop future smart city initiatives.
