White-collar crime is the term first proposed by the Edwin Sutherland. According to him white collar crime is ‘a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation’. Thus he gave new interpretation to the crime. The analysis of white collar crime is different than the traditional types of crimes which included the wider areas of finance, the environment, occupational health and safety, consumer related issues and food regulation. The nature of the crime is shifting from the traditional crimes to the newer crimes mostly categorized as the white collar crimes. The advancement in the technology and growth of education has accentuated the rate of white collar crimes in our society. This type of crime usually goes unnoticed because its committed by the people during their occupational activities generally includes the person of respectability. Therefore this paper attempts to understand white collar crime, the nature and cause of its prevalence in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
