Title

Micro and Small Enterprises: Ethiopia at a Glance -A Literature Review

Abstract

Worldwide, Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) have been accepted as the engine of economic growth and for promoting equitable development of a nation. In Ethiopia too, MSEs play a pivotal contributory to the economy. In addition, in recent years MSE sector has consistently registered higher employment growth rate as an alternative to self-employment for graduate students compared to the overall industrial sector even if problems are there. The major advantage of the sector is its employment potential at low capital cost. In relation to this, a large number of studies have been conducted covering different aspects of micro and small enterprises in both developing and developed countries. To enable the MSE sector to grow at a higher pace in achieving Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), the Ethiopian government has made efforts for the promotion and development of MSE. Accordingly, this review of literature is confined to micro and small enterprise in Ethiopia due to the structure and natures varies from country to country. The study adopted a systematic review of 21 refereed empirical articles on factors affecting MSE start up and normal operating activities as a business which is concomitant to the roles, determinants of growth and related issues. Based on the brief review of relevant studies presented in the area of the micro and small enterprise; the reviewer identified 12 variables on roles and more than 65 determinant factors of MSE. The way of citation is topic order based and chronologically.
