Title

Sexual and Reproductive Health: Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices among College Students: The case of Tigray Region

Abstract

Background: this study is a cross sectional survey intended to investigate the Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) knowledge, attitude and practice of College students in Tigray region. Methods: From a total of 2888 students; 403 samples are selected by using Cochran sampling size determination formula and added 5% for non-response rate. Respondents are classified in to stratum and proportionate stratification formula is used to determine sample size and simple random sampling is employed to select samples from each stratum. The data is collected using quantitative survey and subsequent analysis made by using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, two way ANOVA and chi-square. Results: College respondents have good level of knowledge on SRH with a mean score of 66.26; a mean score of 49.5 as a bench mark. However, female students are less knowledgeable than males. A SRH attitude is found to be negative; with high proportion of females than males. Besides, majorities (77.1%) of the sexually active respondents have had more than one sexual partner and 59.3% of them reported as non-contraceptive users during every sexual intercourse. Conclusions and Recommendations: it is possible to conclude that knowledge of College students on SRH is considerably high. Nevertheless, their attitude is substantially negative and majority of sexually active respondents found to be involved in risky sexual behaviors. Therefore, it is better if continuous health education campaigns will be conducted through IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials posted inside and outside of the campuses. It is also better to train instructors to effectively impart SRH education to College students.
