Title

Analysis and Execution of Shunt active power filter for Harmonics Reduction in Arc Furnace Load

Abstract

Electric arc furnace unbalanced, nonlinear and highly time-varying load therefore generate many power quality issues. The main issue is the introduction of harmonics to the system and in this paper, harmonics is mitigated by shunt active power filter. Using chaotic and deterministic elements an electric arc furnace model(EAF) is designed and implemented in a Simulink. The mitigation of harmonics is carried out by the performance of different optimization methods Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Harmony Search Algorithm(HSA) for tuning the PI controller parameters in the implementation on shunt active power filter. The proposed-work emphases on employing a controlled strategy for extracting the current and voltage and has been implemented using MATLAB platform. The proposed techniques give the THD content which is minimized by the use of HSA on comparison to PSO and GA optimized PI controllers. Hence, this implementation leads to overall improvement in system performance.
