Title

Universal Basic Income- An Indian Perspective

Abstract

This study has been undertaken to know the suitability, benefits and restraint of Universal Basic income in Indian perspective. With the publication of Economic Survey of India, 2016-17, on January31, 2017, Universal Basic Income occupied central position among Indian intellectuals as a matter of debate and discussion. It has become a matter of concern that whether India is ready for adaptation and effective implementation of Universal Basic Income or not? Debate on Basic Income has internationally advanced considerably in the last five years. Although, India has made a remarkable progress in bringing down poverty from about 70% at the time of independence to about 22% in 2011-12 (Tendulkar Committee). However keeping in view the fact the large section of population is living below poverty line, this is why nation shall now think of alternate policies of reducing poverty. Indian economy has been liberalized in 1991 since then nearly 27 years has been passed, now a days major economic decision is being taken by forces of market. It is therefore citizen most have some basic income to at least fulfill their basic necessities. Universal Basic Income is something different from Capital Grant which is known as equal start to Capitalism. Our county has technological advantage over other countries of world but the fruits of that advantages is limited certain elite hands. Thus it becomes a matter of concern to at least thing about Universal Basic Income.
