In comparing India with the rest of the world to see how India is doing, the results depend greatly on which sections of the Indian population we look at. Comparisons of India with other countries are often made for the purpose of checking where the country fits in the international ‘league’. The focus, quite often, is on India’s ‘rank’ (for example, in terms of GDP per capita). That is not a bad way to proceed, and the Indian obsession with the rank of the country in the world league can be a useful way to start. But much depends on the variable chosen for the ranking. As should be clear from the hype around the growth rate of GDP or GNP per head, this is one league in which India is doing rather well. That high-achievement story, however, conflicts somewhat with India’s mediocre performance in the progress of quality of life, as reflected in the standard social indicators.
