Title

Evaluate: Psychological Time is More Important than the Clock Time in the Stream of Consciousness Novels of Virginia Woolf.

Authors

Abstract

Abstract: In this paper I have evaluated that ‘la duree’ or psychological time or inner time is an important factor in the stream of consciousness novel. Time is divided into – the mechanical time or clock time and the psychological time or the inner time. Clock time is based upon repetition of spatial nature. Psychological time is considered as a flow and a continuous moving consciousness or stream of human mind. The modern stream of consciousness novel shifts the emphasis from outer trappings of fiction to the inner workings of the human mind. Naturally the chronological time set aside. Our life is inconsistent. The thought in human mind or human consciousness, like river, is ever flowing and always changing. A stream is never the same one second to the next just as consciousness is not the same one second to the next. Virginia Woolf likes to break from established structure in favour of a deeper exploration into the human mind. Through the use of stream of consciousness technique and psychological time the novelist renders the soul or psyche accurately and realistically. The paper details that the psychological time has an important structural impact on Virginia Woolf’s stream of consciousness novels: Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Waves and Orlando.
