The fact that the Arabs knew the southern part of the Indian sub continent long before the rise of Islam in Arabia is now widely accepted. The Arabs were actively engaged trade with the western coast of India as early as the second century B.C. They had close commercial relations with western parts of India and the spice trade attracted them much. When Islam rose in Arabia, it reached India with the Arab merchants. The tradition that Islam spread in South India during the life time of the prophet is probable. The Arabs had extensive commercial relations even before the rise of Islam in Arabia.
