Title

The Status of Folklore in Indian and Sri Lankan Societies: A Comparative Viewpoint on Operative Religious, Magical Beliefs and Practices.

Abstract

Folklore comprises of traditional creations of primitive and civilized people. It is a store house of mankind which includes his experiences, and practices across the ages as popular and traditional knowledge. Historically, the study of folklore, folkloristics first started in Europe. Folklore is defines as the branch of cultural ethnology. It can be put within the context of culture. Culture is the whole way of life. It is seen as the totality of human expressions in a particular society. The materials that are handed down traditionally from generation to generation which don’t have an inventor or author may be called as folklore. Prominent Folklore scholar Alan Dundes’s study of folklore offers insight into instruction, since folklore is an essential way that cultural knowledge and wisdom is passed down from generation to generation and from peer to peer. (Dandes 1986: 53).
