Abstract Kerala is a world tourist destination considered as one of the ten paradises of the world. Responsible tourism makes the tourism development sustainable by minimizing negative social, economic and environmental impacts. It generates greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well-being of host communities. Kumarakom is a village on Vembanad Lake in the backwaters of Kerala, Southern India is world famous for its responsible tourism initiative. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the major attraction of the tourist centre. The study aims at knowing the sustainable tourism development of the region by revealing the problems and benefits of responsible tourism. It is found out that Pollution is the most intensive problem blocking sustainable tourism development and Creation of Employment Opportunities is the most rewarding benefit.
